AfS Spotlight: Roxana (Scholarship Recipient)

Roxana is an 11-year-old girl with 5 siblings in Corozo, Nicaragua. When asked to describe herself she says she is shy, friendly, happy, and a good student. Her favorite place is the Margarita Arauz School because she likes to study and play with her friends. And, Roxana is a Artists for Soup scholarship recipient. The scholarship helps pay for her school materials such as uniforms.

Despite her young age, Roxana likes to make dolls with the Artists for Soup doll-making women’s collective, which her mother is a part of. She enjoys the distraction of crafting dolls. She also likes working in the school garden, which she visits every day to weed, plant seeds, and water the plants.

During this time with AfS she says she has learned to be aware that she has to take care of her community and she has more love for the community. She admires the great example of her mother and always goes with her to AfS meetings. She likes working with AfS because she thinks it is good to have food in her backyard and food from gardens at school.

When asked about the change she would like to see in the world, she answers that she wants a community where all the people help each other and she would like a park for children in their community.

We are proud of Roxana’s commitment to school. Her leadership makes more children motivated to garden and learn about the importance of eating healthy food and working in a friendly way with the environment.

Ella disfruta la distracción de hacer muñecas. También le gusta trabajar en el jardín de la escuela, que visita todos los días para limpiar, plantar semillas y regar las plantas.
