When Laura Robinson began her internship with Artists for Soup, she had just finished her first year in the Master of Global Policy Studies program at the LBJ School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas in Austin. At the beginning of the summer, Laura travelled to New York for a week-long orientation with Artists for Soup’s Director. During that visit she began developing a grant writing strategy, website updates, and scheduling weekly video meetings with staff in Nicaragua, among other things. To say Laura is dynamic would be an understatement.

Working with Laura, one quickly realizes she could succeed in many kinds of work.  She writes with clarity and precision, analyzes problems and possibilities with amazing skill, and tends to be very diplomatic. In 2014-15 she was a Fulbright Scholar in India, where she studied nonprofits that trained elected women representatives. When asked why she chose to study public affairs, she says, “After working in refugee resettlement as an AmeriCorps VISTA, I decided that not only did I want to improve individual lives through nonprofits, but I also wanted to have an overarching, strategic impact.”  In the future, Laura hopes to continue working with globally-focused nonprofits as a fundraising professional.

Laura says she likes the way Artists for Soup approaches food security by combining gardens and arts collectives in ways that improve day-to-day living.  “I also think it is a beautiful thing to have a garden and watch it grow – to literally see the fruits of your labor,” she says.
