SEED-SAVING

Artists for Soup is expanding our seed-saving training for family gardeners to include a seed bank at the demonstration garden. This seed bank will increase and diversify the supply of seeds available to our family growers.

Gardeners currently save these seeds: Squash, Tomato, Pepper, Pumpkin, Cucumber, Chili, Corn, Bean, Sunflower, and Coriander.

We expose family gardeners to new types of vegetables, legumes and grains. For example, our workshop lunches may include Ethiopian kale, purple carrot, purple pepper, watermelon radish, and butternut squash, varieties that grow successfully in the Corozo region but may be unfamiliar to participants. Once participants have tried these varieties they are generally eager to grow them.
